What brings you to the mat? Maybe you’re looking for a new fitness routine to keep you moving, or self-defense techniques to feel safer and more confident. Maybe you practiced martial arts in the distant or not-too-distant past and you want it to be part of your life again. Or you’ve been inspired by a friend—or one of your kids!—who really wants to train together. Part of the beauty of martial arts is, your journey is your own, and it’s never too late to get back, or to begin!
Lots of people are talking about us.
TBK offers specific classes for adults of all skill levels, including teens, seniors, and everyone in between, as well as group classes (perfect for families). There’s always room for adults in beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes, too. Classes begin with warmups and stretching.
Depending on the day (schedules alternate), training typically focuses on choreographed forms and falling, or one-step self-defense techniques and sparring. Repetition of skills ensures techniques become second-nature, to be recalled under duress in cases where self-defense is necessary.
While the content of classes may be predictable, TBK instructors are always developing exciting new activities to keep classes challenging and interesting. Classes often include history of the art or application of techniques, as well.
There is no prerequisite martial arts training, athletic ability, or physical conditioning. While adults don’t benefit from the same resilience as younger martial artists, strength and flexibility training, safety equipment, and specific instruction help ensure everyone leaves class in better shape than they arrived—and over time, students see improvement in flexibility, strength, and mobility that can enhance performance in athletics or activities of daily living.
Training also results in confidence that carries students outside the studio into their personal and professional relationships, and helps them succeed in pursuing other goals. (When you break a board with your bare hands, you realize you’re less limited than you thought you were!)
Don’t tell the kids… but adults have fun, too! Learning and practicing together builds camaraderie adults don’t always have the opportunity to find in the workplace or classroom. TBK has a way of bringing people together—like family—and there’s always room for more. Join us!
Tireless positive attitude
The Helsdons have a tireless positive attitude, an appreciation for martial arts, and the patience to teach children and adults alike. Their skills and communication styles complement each other, and they instill in their students the desire to be better martial artists and better people.
We have found great satisfaction in the hard work and accomplishments we’ve had so far, and we have been proud to represent TBK in tournaments and events. We are very grateful to Master Helsdon, Master H, and their staff for their inspiration and all the hard work that they put into True Balance Karate. We look forward to many years of learning, pushing ourselves, and being healthier and happier.
I look forward to each class
I began training at TBK five years ago. I can’t begin to describe how much I love it there. I never thought I’d make it as far as I have or be able to do the things that I can do. I am stronger and more confident than when I started, and I’m very close to earning my black belt. I look forward to each class and continuing on my journey in Tang Soo Do.
Options for both adults and seniors
TBK has great physical activity options for both adults and seniors. No matter what your background in martial arts (if any), you’ll find their approach founded in the best learning principles: comprehensive lesson planning, demonstration, repetition, feedback, patience, encouragement, and fun.
Instructors who really encourage you
Master Helsdon and Master H are wonderful instructors who really encourage you to keep working on developing your skills and to get to the next level. I love that I am able to get real-world application of techniques I am learning, as well as some history of Tang Soo Do in class. Everyone at the studio is very supportive of each other. If you don’t understand something, they will work with you before or after class to help you. There is only positive reinforcement and encouragement here.
